About Us

SAHARA was founded in 2019 to provide free out-patient treatment for people who use substances problematically.

We have our roots in the Treatment Action Campaign for HIV treatment and as such run several HIV prevention and treatment initiatives alongside our substance use treatment services.

We believe that both substance use and HIV are exacerbated by the same societal factors. Our participation in the region-wide Planet Youth programme aims to improve protective factors among youth by focusing on healthy lifestyles, safe and conducive schools, and improved family life.

Planet Youth

Planet Youth is a partnership between government and non-profit organisations to create a better environment for healthy living in George and surrounds.

Every two years, Planet Youth conducts an anonymous survey at high schools in George, tracking rates of substance use, the factors that lead young people to use substances, and the factors that protect them.

Family structures, support at school and peer pressure are all factors that play a role.

The Western Cape Government, the University of Cape Town, and local NGOs are working together to implement evidence-based solutions to build a stronger, healthier community.
